Custom Turned Newels
Newels introduce the balustrade system. While structurally necessary, the starting newel at the foot of the stairs often presents the theme of the handrail and balusters. With our skilled craftsmen and complete wood shop, Beautiful Custom Stairs, can make stunning turned newels to complement new or existing stair systems.
The style of a newel is described as either a box or a turned newel. The term turned refers to all or part of the newel being carved, or turned on a wood lathe. A box newel reflects a square post design without lathe carving. Our craftsmen can create graceful curved newels or incorporate a mix of both box and intricate lathe designs on a single post.
Post-to-post newels reflect how the handrail is attached to a newel. In a post-to-post design, the handrail ends at each newel. The top of the newel commonly rises above the railing. We can cap each newel with a finial of wood, glass or metal.
An over the post newel describes how the railing is attached on top of the newel. Also known as a continuous railing, with this configuration the newels act as decorative supports without interrupting the flow of the handrail. A combination of the two styles can be used in stairs that turn corners or transition from a landing.
